I am not a cook but for over 20 years, I've been cooking/making my dogs homemade food. My dogs have lived over 15 years and I attribute their long lives to the quality of the food they had been fed. I make a large batch of food and then freeze what I do not need immediately. I give each dog a good-sized portion with a little bit of commercial kibble. Below is the recipe I use.
5 lb. chicken
1 lb. ground beef
1 can chicken broth
1 package frozen peas and carrots
2 c brown rice, uncooked
1/2 c barley, uncooked
1/2 c lentils, uncooked
1/4 c oatmeal, uncooked
1/4 c Cream of Wheat, uncooked
1/2 t oregano
1/2 c parsley, dried
4 eggs
1/4 c oil (flax or fish)
1. Place chicken and beef in an ovenproof dish.
2. Cook chicken and ground beef in oven for about 1 hour at 350 degrees or until the meat is cooked through.
3. Drain fat off the meat, remove skin and bones, and break up meat into bite size pieces.
4. Place all ingredients into a large crock-pot and add enough water to cover.
5. Cook 4 hours on high.
