Chinchillas love to leap and climb up to 6 ft. We have to contemplate the type of cage, which is cozy for them. Wider and higher cages are best choices for chinchillas as they enjoy scooting and playing in their cages.
Chinchillas like chewing to file down their teeth, so wire cages are the best home for chinchillas. Buy a cage, where the mesh spaces at the bottom of the cage are no larger than a ½-inch and the sides no more than 1 to 2 inches apart. Make sure that the part of the cage where the chinchilla walks has smaller mesh spaces to avoid leg injuries. Chinchillas can't digest the coating painted on mesh wires. So avoid painted cages.
Temperature is an important factor for the chinchilla's cage. Once you have your idea of where to place the cage, consider this, 65-75 degrees F is the ideal temperature. In summer, you should choose a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight and maximum temperature must not exceed 86 degrees F. Chinchillas can sustain temperatures up to 83 degrees F. Try placing a pan full of covered ice cubes in the cage with chinchillas. Chinchillas do not sweat. To cool them do not use fans, as it will only circulate hot air. Chinchillas will lie against the pan to cool, but never allow them to fall onto it. Now find a good place for the cage in your house considering these facts.
Cages that come with a pull out tray are best for easy cleaning. The pull out trays should be cleaned thoroughly at least once a week. You can use Pine shavings or newspaper in the bottom of a solid floor cage. Again, clean the cages frequently, to make your task easy, Chinchillas choose a particular spot to urinate. So place an extra bed or straw with some baking soda in that place to absorb moisture and cut down on odor. Sterilize and sanitize the entire cage once a month.
The cage in which chinchilla is enclosed must have an exercise wheel. So make sure the cage is large enough to have the wheel. The wheel helps in exercising the chinchilla. It allows them to happily frolic in the cage. At least an hour playtime will keep the chinchilla happy and lively. Chinchillas are rodents that like chewing things. So, keep the cage free of chemicals, poisonous plants, and even wires that could make them sick if chewed. Do not miss the opportunity to observe and play with them. Playing with your chinchilla is the best method to bond with them. You will feel happy to watch your chinchilla crawling and kissing you for treats.
