21st Century Dog Training Series Part II: Electronic Bark Collars
by JOHN WAHL

Okay on to business, the first collars we are going to look over are the bark collars. Most of the bark collars all work along the same line. The guttural growl of the dog will activate the collar and when the dog barks it sets off the stimulation. There are spray collars that work along the same lines only difference is instead of a shock the dog gets a nose full of citrus or some other scent. These collars do have some effect on some dogs, however (and this is my opinion only) I don’t think the correction lasts as long as the correction made with the electronic stimulation, again that is my own opinion. This is something that we have to keep in mind whenever we read any of these training articles. You are getting one individuals opinion as to what works and what in their opinion will work for you. Again if you read something within my articles write me, E-mail me or even call me and we’ll discuss what it is you are having trouble with. There are a lot of things that I DO NOT know but there isn’t much I can’t find out for you.

When picking out a bark collar you have to make sure that you are getting one that will be good with your dog. If you have a large dog it will do you no good to get one that is designed for small dogs and for Pete’s Sake you don’t want to get one designed for large dogs if you are going to use it on a small breed. You can purchase a very good bark collar for $40.00 to $110.00. Again if you are not sure get in touch. PetSafe, SportDog, INNOTEK, DT Systems, Dogtra and Tri-Tronics all offer superb bark collars. Most of your lower end and some of your higher end (not many) run on replaceable batteries. I prefer that all of my collars are rechargeable. Yes they cost a bit more but I never have to carry batteries with me and I don’t have to wonder how long the batteries will last. Most of the rechargeable collars now even have car chargers so you will always be able to charge the battery whenever you feel it’s necessary. Good collars are set up with multiple settings so that you can get the maximum from each collar. It’s true some dogs will get used to the lower settings to where they can actually bark through them. But with several settings, and I found it extremely effective to do, mix the settings up once the dog has been on the collar for awhile. Once he feels the stimulation start or the warning buzzer he won’t know if he/she is going to get a tickle or a slap, therefore he/she will think about it be fore doing it. Praise whenever you can. If you are out and the dog behaves properly then go over pet them and tell them how good a dog they are. It may take quite awhile but you could eventually remove the collar and not have to worry about the dog barking. I hope this has been helpful and as I have said if you have questions get in touch. We’re here to make your training as easy as we can for both you and your dog.
